Wear A Helmet, There Are No Excuse!

We found the slogan "Wear A Helmet, There Are No Excuse" from the Asia Injury Prevention(AIP) foundation. Purpose of this foundation is trying to encourage people to wear the bicycle-helmet and improve the road safety knowledge. Although wearing a bicycle-helmet is not in law in Malaysia, but public must be aware of the raod safety.
You have a beutiful ride. You fill your water bottle, lace up your shoes and head out. The thought of a head injury doesn't even cross your mind — but it should. Without a bicycle helmet, you're taking a chance that may cost you your life. Although collisions with cars or other vehicles are likely to be the most serious, even a low-speed fall on a bicycle path can be dangerous.
Don't assume wear helmet only for professional cyclist, helmet is used by every bike user. Helmet wouldn't make one person look "ugly" and ashamed. Wearing helmet could protect your head from accident and other road users would respect you as you care your safety. Wear A Helmet, There Are No Excuse!
How to select a proper helmet?
Comfortable, adjustable - must comfortable to wear for concentration riding
helmet is safe to use - must contain CE approval or safety approval
Fits your head - make sure helmet doesn't move front to back, side to side more than 1inch
Visibility - the helmet straps must not blocking you vision. Else change a new one.
Wear the helmet flat on the top of your head and it should cover the top of your forehead without tilting forward or backward. Then, fasten the chin strap just below your chin. If the bicycle helmet doesn't feel snug, use the foam pads that came with the helmet to get a better fit.
Now, you know bicycle helmet basic. Make sure that disctance of your riding doesn't determind the use of bicycle helmet. MUST WEAR HELMET!

Bicycle Brake Systems
USJ Cycles would like to share with you some knowledge about the bicycle brake systems. Certain people may complain that their bicycle brake does not work effectively and uneasy to press the brake levers to stop the bike, especially the kiddy bicycles, they may think that since their kids do not ride so fast and so well, brake systems may not be so important to them. NOoo! It could endanger their lives, if one day when they know to cycle but the bike does not equip with a "good" brake. There are many reasons to cause an inefficient brake. In order in having a efficient brake system, first, to ensure having a smooth running brake cable. A smooth running brake cable always drive a smooth and efficient braking power. Second, to pay attention on the Brake Levers, brake levers made of soft material such as plastic may resulting soft brake contact on the rims. A good pair of brake levers is made of either alloy, steel or plastic with steel inserted.
Besides that, brake arms as shown in diagram above. Nowadys, V-break(5) is the most common use on every bicycles such as MTB, Kid bike, Bmx, etc. Good quality v-break always equiped with a good spring back in order to prevent the break shoes tocuhing the rims. It can be adjusted if lucky. Normally, v-brakes arms material is made by steel or alloy.
Cantilever arms(2) always not recommended by us. Why say so, the brake cable from the lever is not directly to the cantilever arms and its rely on the cross cable. Thus, v-brake always preferable. Some kid bicycles(nylon wheel) are using caliper brake (3). But the caliper brake can differentiate to 2 types, 1 for kid bicycles, 1 for racing bicycles. Normally, caliper brake for the kid bicycle not as good as v-brakes, even though pressed the brake, the bike takes a short time to stop.
Lastly, the rest of the brake systems such as coaster brakes and u-brakes are not so commonly used on every types of bike. The trend of MTB brake systems is disc brakes. Disc brakes always good for all weather, its like a car's break technology called ABS(anti locking system).
Improve you road safety by using effective brake systems!

Feel uncomfortable with your seating?

Diagram above shows the reasons behind of the uncomftable seating. First, don't abuse the saddle, it may caused by the untighten nuts on the saddle which will cause the angle of the saddle either facing upward or downward with certain angle. Adjust it to a parrallel possition, then try again.
Second, choose the correct size of saddle that suits you. The modern/trendy design of the saddles are always looked attractive. But very importment, you have to consider whether saddles size is broad enough to sopport your weight? In physics theory, pressure = human weight /area (saddle). So try to imagine, if the area very narrow, pressure act to your body is greater. Besides, narrow shape of saddle allows the cyclist to spin his/her legs at high rpm(revolution per minute).
Third, choose the higher density of the saddle. Heavy weight person should use the high density saddles. If the saddle's density too low, the inner foam will be softening in short period. Lastly, DONT wear jeans or ordinary cloth. Because clothing such as jeans and many types of shorts have seams in the crotch area. Sitting on top of these seams puts pressure and causing pain and numbness. The best is to wear cycling pant and jersey while cycling.
Lastly, chose the saddle which you sit comfortably. There are hundreds of saddlles available in the market place.

Choose an appropriate bike for your children
Referring to the above diagram , a 12" wheel bicycle is the first bicycle which is recommended for the kids age between 2.5 -4. A 12" bike is usually installed a pair of training wheel which helps to guide and train the kid on cycling. You may consider a tricycle as an alternate choice under this age group. Between age group 4-7, a 16" wheel bicycle is recommended. Most of the 16" bikes is also come with a pair of training wheel.
When the kid reaches 6 year old, you may consider to select a 20" bike for them. If the kid is still unable or lack of confidence to balance his/her body to cycle on 2 wheels, you may consider to install a pair of training wheel on the bike, but it is usually not so encouraged because kids at this stage are expected to cycle on 2 wheels.
The main difference between a normal 20" bikes and a 20"BMX is BMX is built of strong frame and fork, using tough components will is suitable for rough rider. BMX bikes have no age boundary so long the rider ages 8 and above because it possesses a hige-raised handle and longer fram. If the rider is skillful on doing stunt and performance, a BMX is the best choice.
Another alternative choice for age group 8-13 is 24"mountain bike (MTB). MTB comes with multiple gear with a total speed of 15-24 . A MTB is recommended for teenagers who prepare to travel for longer journey.
A 26" MTB is recommended for rider ages 13 and above.
If rider has interest on speed riding on road, a road bike or racing bike can be considered.
City bike is an utility bike is good for schooling or nearby shopping. Additional accessories such as basket, carrier and fenders are usually installed on this bike.

The 1st MONTY Trial bike in USJ
Bike trials is a form of mountain biking derived from motorcycle trials. The rider negotiates man-made and natural obstacles without their feet touching the ground. It originated in Spain. At the most basic level, trials riding can be summed up as bicycle handling skills. It evolved from motorcycle trial riding (jumping up, over obstacles, man-made or natural) into an off-season bicycle pastime. It now has a strong — though small — following, and can be seen worldwide.
Skills taken from trials riding can be used practically on any bicycle for balance, for example controlled braking and track standing, or balancing on the bike without putting a foot down. Trial bike characteristics include, but are not limited to: powerful brakes, wide handlebars, light parts, low gearing, a thick rear tire that provides grip, a heavy emphasis on frame geometry, and no seat (depending on the make)
